Chandigarh, a union territory in northwestern India near the Shivalik foothills, serves as the shared capital of Punjab and Haryana. Built from 1953, it became one of India's earliest planned cities and is internationally celebrated for its architecture and urban design. Le Corbusier prepared the master plan, building on earlier work by Maciej Nowicki and Albert Mayer, while a team led by Le Corbusier alongside architects Jane Drew and Maxwell Fry designed most of its government buildings and housing. The city's Capitol Complex—part of Le Corbusier's global architectural legacy—was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016. Situated 260 kilometers northwest of New Delhi, Chandigarh has grown substantially since inception and anchors a tri-city metropolitan region with over 1.6 million inhabitants, establishing itself as a model of successful modernist urban planning.
