The Sepahsalar Mosque in Tehran's Baharestan district is one of the city's largest mosques, built in the Qajar architectural style beginning in 1879 under the patronage of Mirza Hosein Sepahsalar, Grand Vizier during the reign of Naser al-Din Shah Qajar. Designed by architect Hossein Lorzadeh and completed in its first phase by 1884, the mosque combines a madrasa (theological school) within its complex and rises to a height of 34 meters. Its distinctive design features eight minarets, a unique arrangement among Iranian mosques that made it a landmark of late Qajar and Pahlavi-era Tehran. Constructed of tile, plaster, marble, brick, and stone, the building was designated a national heritage site in 1936 and remains known by its original name despite being officially renamed the Motahhari Mosque following the 1979 Revolution.
