The Shelby County Courthouse in Harlan, Iowa, completed in 1892, exemplifies the Richardsonian Romanesque style and was designed by architect Charles E. Bell. As the third courthouse building erected for the county, it has served as the seat of court functions and county administration since its construction. The building was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 as part of a thematic survey of county courthouses in Iowa, and in 1994 it was recognized as a contributing property within the Harlan Courthouse Square Commercial District.
