Designed by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa, Shenzhen Book City (Central) is the flagship bookstore of Shenzhen Publishing and Distribution Group, located in the city center of Shenzhen. Sprawling across 42,000 square meters on a single floor, it houses more than three million books and holds the distinction of being the world's largest single-story book mall. The store pioneered the "bookstore and shopping mall two-in-one" concept in China, blending retail commerce with literary access. It contributed significantly to Shenzhen's UNESCO designation as a "Global Model City for Universal Reading." Beyond its commercial function, the venue serves the community by hosting weekly storytelling competitions for children aged four to eight.
