South Bass Island Light, a 21-meter lighthouse on the southern end of South Bass Island in Lake Erie, was constructed in 1895. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990, it is believed to be the only lighthouse in the United States owned by a university—Ohio State University—a distinction that reflects its unique institutional stewardship among American lighthouses.
