The Erie Land Light stands on the bluffs overlooking Lake Erie in Erie, Pennsylvania, one of three lighthouses in the city and situated in Lighthouse Park east of downtown. Originally constructed in 1818 as one of the first lighthouses built by the United States on the Great Lakes, it was replaced in 1851; the second tower sank due to poor foundations and soil quality by 1858. The current stone structure, erected in 1867, remained in service until 1880, was reactivated in 1885, and was permanently decommissioned in 1899. After its lenses and lantern were removed, the lighthouse was sold to the city in 1934, documented by the Historic American Buildings Survey in 1936, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
