Portland Head Light, completed in 1791 on a headland at Cape Elizabeth, Maine, stands as the first lighthouse built by the United States government and Maine's oldest. Constructed of stone and rising 24.38 meters, the tower marks the entrance to Portland Harbor's primary shipping channel within Casco Bay. Now automated and maintained by the United States Coast Guard, the light station remains a Historic Civil Engineering Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The former lighthouse keeper's house, preserved within Fort Williams Park, serves as a maritime museum.
