The Spiegel Office Building, completed in 1936–37 at 1038 W. 35th Street in Chicago's Bridgeport neighborhood, is a streamlined example of Art Moderne design crafted by engineers Battey & Kipp for the mail-order retailer Spiegel Inc. Built as the company repositioned itself toward higher-quality merchandise and wealthier customers, the structure consolidated scattered offices into a single, efficient facility featuring an industrial loft plan with open floors. An addition designed by engineer Abraham Epstein in the 1940s expanded the building further, enabling the company to maintain all operations under one roof. Now recognized as both a Chicago Landmark and a property on the National Register of Historic Places, the building stands as a testament to mid-twentieth-century corporate architecture and the evolving business strategies of a nineteenth-century mail-order pioneer.
