Located on New York Avenue in Ivy City, the Hecht Company Warehouse is a striking example of Streamline Moderne design built in 1937 by engineer Gilbert V. Steel of the New York firm Abbott and Merkt. The building served as the central warehouse for The Hecht Company and was expanded in 1948. Its distinctive facade features extensive use of glass block, with black brick interspersed with glass block spelling out "The Hecht Co" at the fifth floor, while a twelve-pointed star-shaped cupola crowns the corner, illuminated at night. At its opening, the warehouse included an in-house vehicle repair shop, air conditioning on the basement and first two floors, and three railroad track platforms. The building underwent careful rehabilitation in 1992 using matching materials and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The site is currently undergoing redevelopment into the Hecht Warehouse District, a mixed-use retail and residential complex.
