The United States Post Office Cooper Station, completed in 1937 at the corner of Fourth Avenue and East 11th Street in Manhattan, exemplifies the Streamline Moderne style favored for federal buildings of the Depression era. Designed by consulting architect William Dewey Foster for the Treasury Department's Office of the Supervising Architect, this Art Moderne structure serves the East Village neighborhood's 10003 ZIP code. Named after Peter Cooper, the 19th-century industrialist and philanthropist who founded the nearby Cooper Union, the post office was recognized as a historic landmark when listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
