Located at 350 Canal Street in Manhattan's Tribeca neighborhood, the United States Post Office Canal Street Station is a two-story Streamline Moderne structure completed in 1937. Designed by consulting architect Alan Balch Mills under the Office of the Supervising Architect of the United States Department of the Treasury, the building presents a symmetrical composition clad in buff terra cotta panels with a black terra cotta base, accented by a fluted frieze finished in tarnished silver. Its most distinctive features are the articulated inset bay windows along Church Street, which create a dynamic plastic quality and suggest the visual scanning of the streets above and below. The interior houses a 1938 relief titled "Indian Bowman," executed by artist Wheeler Williams. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989, the station exemplifies the refined Art Deco modernism favored for federal buildings during the Depression era.
