St Bride's Church stands on Fleet Street in the City of London, a Church of England parish with roots possibly extending to the 6th-century dedication to Saint Bridget. Sir Christopher Wren designed the present structure in 1672 in the English Baroque style, though the building suffered severe damage during the London Blitz in 1940, when fire largely gutted its interior. It was subsequently reconstructed in the 1950s in a neo-baroque idiom. The church's distinctive steeple rises 226 feet (69 metres), making it the second-highest of all Wren's church spires, surpassed only by St Paul's Cathedral. Its prominent location on Fleet Street has forged a strong association with journalism and newspapers over the centuries, a connection commemorated annually since 2012 through a Journalists' Commemorative Service.
