St. Catherine's Church in Lübeck's Old City is a Brick Gothic structure built beginning in 1301 and designed by Paul Laspeyres. Originally part of a Franciscan monastery dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria, the church was seized by the city in 1531 following a Lutheran church ordinance drawn up by Johannes Bugenhagen, the pastor and ally of Martin Luther who had arrived in Lübeck to advance the Reformation. Now a museum church and exhibition hall managed by Lübeck's museums since 1980, it displays works including a copy of Bernt Notke's *Saint George and the Dragon*, epitaphs by Godfrey Kneller and Tintoretto's *Resurrection of Lazarus*, and 20th-century clinker brick sculptures by Ernst Barlach and Gerhard Marcks adorning its facade. Designated a Kulturdenkmal, the church forms part of the Lübeck World Heritage Site.
