St. Catherine's Church in Hamburg-Mitte is one of the city's five principal Lutheran churches and a masterwork of Brick Gothic architecture. Its spire rises 116.7 metres, dominating the skyline above an island near the historic harbour on the Elbe river. The base of the spire dates from the 13th century, making it the second oldest building preserved in Hamburg after the Neuwerk lighthouse. Situated opposite what was once the southern boundary of the medieval city, the church traditionally served as the spiritual home of seamen and remains a heritage monument to its maritime heritage.
