The Great Tower Neuwerk, completed in 1310 on Hamburg's Neuwerk island, stands as one of the world's oldest surviving lighthouse structures and the oldest secular building on the German coast. Rising 39 meters, this fortified tower originally served as a beacon and watchtower before its formal use as a lighthouse from 1814 to 2014. It remains Hamburg's oldest building and a designated heritage monument, representing a remarkable survival of medieval maritime architecture.
