St. George Melkite Catholic Church in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, completed in 1917, serves as a striking architectural bridge between Old World tradition and American practice. Designed by Erhard Brielmaier and built of brick, the church was established to serve Syrian-Lebanese immigrants who had arrived in the city following the 1892 Chicago World's Fair. The building reflects its dual heritage: while its single-story form, gable roof, and tall windows conform to conventional Wisconsin church design, the facade displays Byzantine Revival character through a shaped parapet wall and three bulbous domes, modeled after St. George Church of Ain-Berdel in Lebanon. As the second oldest Melkite Catholic church in the United States, St. George stands as both a religious and cultural landmark, now recognized on the National Register of Historic Places and the Wisconsin State Register.
