Located in Virginia, Minnesota, the St. Louis County District Courthouse is a Beaux-Arts building erected in 1910 to serve the northern district of the sprawling county, whose vastness made a southern courthouse in Duluth impractical for Iron Range communities. The structure replaced an earlier frame building that had housed the second court district established in 1904. In 1921, the firm Croft & Boerner added an architecturally sympathetic expansion. Today, the courthouse remains one of Virginia's finest examples of Beaux-Arts design and was recognized on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992 as a symbol of local self-governance and the seat of government for the region's long-serving judicial center.
