St Martin-in-the-Fields, a Church of England parish church at the north-east corner of Trafalgar Square in Westminster, London, occupies a site with medieval roots. A succession of structures stood here through the medieval and Jacobean periods, when the location remained farmland beyond London's walls. As Westminster expanded in the early modern era, the church became a principal parish in the western reaches of the old City. When the aging medieval and Jacobean building deteriorated beyond repair, James Gibbs designed a replacement in an influential neoclassical style, completed between 1722 and 1726. This Grade I listed building now serves as one of the defining visual landmarks of Trafalgar Square's open urban space.
