St. Mary's Church stands in the center of Tskhinvali, capital of South Ossetia, built in 1718 in the Armenian architectural tradition. Originally constructed as a church of the Armenian Apostolic Church, it features a dome and was built using brick and stone, with masonry walls ornamented by large crosses and arches embedded in the facade. The church later came to serve various Orthodox Christian groups in the region. During the 2008 war between Russia and Georgia, it sustained damage from bombing on the night of August 7–8.
