St. Stephen's Episcopal Church stands at 6807 Northumberland Highway in Heathsville, Virginia, a Carpenter Gothic structure completed in 1874 and consecrated seven years later. Designed by T. Buckler Ghequiere, the church exemplifies rural Virginia's architectural conservatism, employing a style more common to northern states in earlier decades. Its west-facing main elevation features a dominant one-story porch with paired square columns and a steeply pitched roof crowned by a cross. Gothic-arched doorways with herringbone-patterned original doors and quatrefoil stained glass windows open onto trefoil detailing and wooden railings. Narrow stained glass windows and a rose window punctuate the exterior, while the interior comprises four bays per elevation, each with stained glass. The rectangular apse contains three pointed windows, and original furnishings—including the wooden communion rail, pews, and pieces crafted by parishioner Clem Goodman—remain intact. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, the church continues to serve an active Episcopal parish.
