St Thomas's Abbey, an Augustinian monastery in Old Brno, Czech Republic, was founded in 1323 and has undergone architectural evolution across Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical styles. The complex is unique among modern Augustinian communities for being led by an abbot rather than a prior, distinguishing it from other existing Augustinian friaries. The abbey gained international scientific significance through Gregor Mendel, its most renowned abbot, who conducted hereditary experiments on pea plants in the monastery garden between 1856 and 1863—investigations that yielded the foundational principles later termed Mendel's Laws of Inheritance. Today the site holds designation as a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic.
