The Antico Stabilimento Balneare in Mondello, a seaside suburb north of Palermo, Sicily, is an Art Nouveau bathing establishment perched on reinforced concrete pylons extending into the bay. Built in 1912 and inaugurated that year, the structure features colorful Art Nouveau decorations, turrets, and spires. Rodolfo Stoelcker, a German-Italian structural engineer, designed its pioneering reinforced concrete foundations, while the building's architectural designer remains unknown. The interior furnishings were created by the firms of Vittorio Ducrot and Ernesto Basile. Construction was undertaken by Salvatore Rutelli's firm, with foundations by the Ferrobeton company. Financed by the Belgian company Les Tramways de Palerme—which had electrified and developed the formerly malaria-plagued marshland into a pleasure resort—the establishment proved immensely popular during its first three decades. The facility was occupied by Italian, German, and Allied forces during World War II, after which much original furniture was removed.
