Substation 7, a Beaux-Arts electrical facility completed in 1902, stands at 1782 Third Avenue at 99th Street in East Harlem, Manhattan. Built by the Manhattan Railway Company adjacent to the Third Avenue El's 99th Street station, it was designed to electrify the Second, Third, and Ninth Avenue elevated lines by converting 25 Hz alternating current from the 74th Street power station into direct current for electric motors. The substation later served as a critical power source for the IRT Lexington Avenue Line from 1918 through the 1970s. Now owned by the MTA, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
