Substation 219, known as the Harlem Substation, is a historic electrical facility constructed in 1932 by the Independent Subway System to supply power to the IND Eighth Avenue Line in Harlem, Manhattan. This single-story, double-height masonry building exemplifies Art Deco design with refined geometric detailing: a low brick parapet crowned by limestone coping, a limestone frieze composed of diamond-shaped stones arranged in a brick chevron pattern, and aluminium entrance doors adorned with Art Deco geometric motifs. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006, it represents an understated yet architecturally accomplished example of functional infrastructure from the early Depression era.
