Balham is an interchange station in south-west London serving both the Underground's Northern line and National Rail services in the London Borough of Wandsworth. Designed by architect Charles Holden, the station exemplifies Art Deco and modern architectural principles characteristic of mid-twentieth-century London transport infrastructure. The complex comprises multiple underground entrances on either side of Balham High Road (A24), with the National Rail component accessed from the south side, where tracks run along a light-brick viaduct and earth embankment on a quadruple-track configuration. Located 7.5 kilometres from Victoria, the station sits within fare zone 3, and unusually, the Underground and National Rail components operate as separately owned and managed facilities with independent ticket systems and gatelines. The building is Grade II listed.
