Sukhna Lake, a 3-square-kilometre rain-fed reservoir in Chandigarh, India, was created in 1958 by damming the Sukhna Choe, a seasonal stream descending from the Shivalik Hills at the Himalayas' foothills. Designed as part of Le Corbusier's vision for the city, the lake initially suffered from heavy siltation as seasonal flow entered directly. To address this, 25.42 square kilometres of catchment land were afforested and vegetated. In 1974, the Choe was diverted to bypass the lake entirely, with water instead fed through three siltation pots to further minimize sediment accumulation.
