Surp Khach Monastery, the Monastery of the Holy Cross, stands in the eastern part of Crimea near Staryi Krym and dates to 1358. Built in the Armenian architectural tradition, the monastery served as a spiritual center and pilgrimage site for centuries. Before Soviet nationalization, it controlled extensive lands of some 4,000 acres. During the Soviet era, the complex was repurposed as a Pioneer camp and later a tuberculosis clinic, departing from its religious function. Today recognized as a federal cultural heritage site in Russia and a cultural heritage site in Ukraine, the monastery's significance was affirmed when the Central Bank of Russia issued a commemorative silver coin in its honor in 2017.
