Located in the Bahariye quarter of Kadıköy on Istanbul's Anatolian side, the Süreyya Opera House is an Art Deco venue designed by Ottoman Armenian architect Kegham Kavafyan and completed in 1927. Commissioned by Deputy Süreyya İlmen, it was the first musical theatre built in Anatolia Istanbul, though initial limitations in facilities meant it functioned primarily as a cinema for decades. Following a comprehensive functional restoration, the building reopened as an opera house in December 2007, finally realizing its original purpose as a venue for operatic performance.
