The Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum occupies the sixteenth-century palace of Pargalı Ibrahim Pasha, grand vizier under Suleiman the Magnificent, constructed in 1524 in the Sultanahmet Square of Istanbul's Fatih district. Originally founded in 1914, the museum relocated to this Ottoman structure in 1983, repurposing the palace's ceremonial hall as a gallery space that preserves the architectural grandeur of its setting. The collection encompasses over 40,000 works spanning Islamic calligraphy, tiles, rugs, carpets, wooden and stone art, complemented by ethnographic displays that recreate dwellings and rooms from different Turkish regions and periods, with particular focus on nomadic cultures. Positioned across from the Blue Mosque, the museum was the first institution to comprehensively gather Turkish Islamic arts and has since earned recognition as a major cultural hub, receiving the European Council's Special Jury Award for Museum of the Year in 1984 for its educational initiatives and international exhibitions.
