The Synagogue of Besançon, located on Quai de Strasbourg in the Battant district near Besançon's old town, is a stone structure built in 1869 and inaugurated on 18 November of that year. Designed by local architect Pierre Marnotte in the Moorish Revival style, it was commissioned by the Jewish congregation following an Imperial Decree of 1867 that authorized the community to acquire land on what was then called Quai Napoléon. The new building replaced an earlier, undersized synagogue constructed in 1831 on Rue de la Madeleine, as the congregation had grown significantly since its reestablishment in 1807, following centuries of absence after medieval expulsions. The synagogue was classified as a historical monument in 1984.
