The Teatro Lirico di Cagliari is Cagliari's principal opera house, a brutalist concrete structure designed by Italian architects Luciano Galmozzi, Pierfrancesco Ginoulhiac, and Teresa Ginoulhiac Arslan. Built to replace the city's theatres lost during World War II—the Teatro Civico destroyed by Allied bombardment and the Politeama Regina Margherita by fire in 1942—the project won its contract in 1967 but was not inaugurated until 1993. Spanning 5,000 square metres, it accommodates an auditorium of 1,628 seats distributed across stalls (800 seats) and two loggias (431 and 397 seats), with a sizable stage measuring 22 to 23.40 metres wide, 12.5 to 25 metres long, and 23 metres high. The building has received the Premio Franco Abbiati multiple times, including in 2001 for its innovative programming. Conductor Carlos Kleiber performed his final concert here in February 1999.
