The Telesterion was a monumental ancient Greek sanctuary in Eleusis dedicated to Demeter and Persephone, serving as the primary hall for the Eleusinian Mysteries—among the most sacred religious rites of classical Greece. Built in the 7th century BCE, the structure featured a massive fifty-five-yard square roof capable of sheltering three thousand initiates. The exact nature of the mystery rites performed within remained jealously guarded, known only to participants as involving "something done, something said, and something shown." The hall remained a vital center of religious practice until its destruction in the 4th century CE.
