Temple Emanu-El, completed in 1891 in Helena, Montana, was the first synagogue constructed between St. Paul, Minnesota, and Portland, Oregon. Built in Romanesque Revival style, the structure served Helena's once-thriving Jewish community until economic decline in the 1930s forced its sale to the State of Montana. The state converted the interior to office space, added a second floor, and removed most religious symbolism, though the distinctive stained glass windows were preserved. The building later passed to the Catholic Diocese of Helena before being acquired by the Montana Jewish Project in 2022, which has restored it as a center for the state's Jewish community. Today it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
