The Temple Neuf in Strasbourg is a Lutheran church built between 1874 and 1877 by architect Emile Salomon on the site of a medieval Dominican convent destroyed during the Franco-Prussian War. Constructed in pink sandstone in the Neo-Romanesque style, it replaced both the old Dominican Church and its associated library, lost in the fire that swept through Strasbourg on the night of 24–25 August 1870 during the siege. The name "Temple Neuf" (New Church) reflects the building's inheritance of a designation first applied in 1681, when Protestants, expelled from Strasbourg Cathedral following Louis XIV's annexation of the city, reclaimed the Dominican Church for worship. The interior preserves the tombstone of Johannes Tauler, the renowned Dominican mystic, and houses an organ built in 1877 by the celebrated German organ maker Joseph Merklin.
