The Neues Museum stands on Berlin's Museum Island as a masterwork of Friedrich August Stüler, built between 1843 and 1855 under commission from King Frederick William IV of Prussia. Designed in Neoclassical and Renaissance Revival styles, the building suffered considerable damage during World War II and deteriorated during the East German period before undergoing comprehensive restoration by David Chipperfield from 1999 to 2009. Today it houses the Egyptian Museum, the Papyrus Collection, the Museum for Pre- and Early History, and portions of the Antikensammlung. Recognized as part of the Museum Island complex on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1999, the Neues Museum is celebrated for its architectural significance and its role in documenting the evolution of museums as cultural institutions.
