The Altes Museum stands on Museum Island in central Berlin as a major work of German Neoclassical architecture, designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel and built between 1825 and 1830 under the patronage of King Frederick William III of Prussia. The building sits among significant historical monuments—flanked by the Berlin Cathedral, Berlin Palace, and Zeughaus—and currently houses the Antikensammlung (Collection of Classical Antiquities) and portions of the Münzkabinett (coin cabinet). Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999 as part of the Museum Island complex, the Altes Museum stands as a landmark testimony to the evolution of the museum as both a social institution and an architectural form.
