The Temple of Israel, located on the corner of Fourth and Market Streets in Wilmington, North Carolina, is a synagogue completed in 1876 that holds the distinction of being the oldest surviving synagogue in the state and among the earliest Reform synagogues in the American South. Designed by architect Samuel Sloan, the building blends Greek Revival and Moorish Revival architectural styles, reflecting the eclectic tastes of its era and the distinctive aesthetic often employed for Jewish houses of worship during the nineteenth century.
