Built in 1938 in preparation for the 1940 Summer Olympics, Tennispalatsi in Helsinki's Kamppi district is a functionalist sports and cultural complex designed by Helge Lundström. Originally housing four tennis courts, the building later hosted basketball preliminary games during the 1952 Summer Olympics. Today it functions as a multipurpose cultural center, accommodating a Finnkino multiplex cinema, the Helsinki City Art Museum, the Museum of Cultures, and retail shops. Now protected by the city plan, Tennispalatsi exemplifies the modernist sporting venues built to support Helsinki's Olympic ambitions.
