The Centre Cumbernauld is the commercial hub of Scotland's new town of Cumbernauld, designed by Geoffrey Copcutt in the 1950s as an ambitious brutalist megastructure. Conceived as a single massive multi-storey building housing shops, apartments, a hotel, ice rink, police station, and other amenities, Phase 1 was completed between 1963 and 1967 and opened by Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon in May 1967. The development was designed to expand in phases, with subsequent additions including the 2007 Antonine Centre shopping complex linked by walkways and lifts. Despite its architectural ambition, the building has attracted sustained criticism—voted "Britain's most hated building" in a 2005 Channel 4 poll and twice named Scotland's worst town centre by the Carbuncle Awards, which memorably described it as "a rabbit warren on stilts." Local observers have nicknamed its top section the "Alien's Head" for its resemblance to E.T. In March 2022, North Lanarkshire Council announced plans to demolish the structure.
