Hutchesontown C was a Comprehensive Development Area in Glasgow centred on two Brutalist 20-storey slab blocks at 16-32 Queen Elizabeth Square, designed by Sir Basil Spence and housing 400 flats. The modernist structures earned acclaim from architects and designers, yet were plagued by persistent damp and infestations that proved unresolvable even after a major renovation in the late 1980s. The buildings were demolished in 1993, when excessive explosive force—twice the amount deemed necessary—killed a female spectator during the process.
