The Crimson Beech
Staten Island, United States

The Crimson Beech, located at 48 Manor Court in the Lighthouse Hill neighborhood of Staten Island, is Frank Lloyd Wright's only residential design in New York City. Completed in 1959, it was assembled from a prefabricated kit ordered from Marshall Erdman in Madison, Wisconsin—one of just eleven Marshall Erdman Prefab Houses built, and specifically the Prefab #1 model. The house exemplifies Wright's approach to modern domestic design through its long, low L-shaped footprint with wide hip roofs clad in red brick and cream-colored Masonite, accented with redwood battens that emphasize horizontal lines. The front presents a single story, while the rear rises to two stories owing to the sloping site. Interiors feature Philippine mahogany paneling with distinctive raised horizontal bands spaced about a foot apart, along with a sunken living room with cathedral ceiling, combined kitchen and family room, and a gallery accessing four bedrooms. The terne metal roof completed this innovative prefabricated design, which cost $20,000 for components and $35,000 for assembly. Designated a New York City Landmark in August 1990, it remains in private hands.
