The Theodosius Cistern is an ancient Byzantine underground reservoir that survives beneath Istanbul in the Fatih district, accessible through an entrance on Piyer Loti Caddesi. Built during the Byzantine era to supply Constantinople with stored water, this cistern exemplifies the sophisticated infrastructure that sustained the great medieval city. Like other such structures hidden beneath Istanbul's streets, it represents the engineering ingenuity of Roman and Byzantine architects who engineered vast subterranean networks to manage the capital's water resources.
