The Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and completed in 1932, stands near the village of Thiepval in Picardy, France, as a monument to 72,337 missing British and South African servicemen who died in the Battles of the Somme between 1915 and 1918 with no known grave. Rising 45 metres in height, this Art Deco structure has been described as "the greatest executed British work of monumental architecture of the twentieth century." Maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and inscribed as a French monument historique and UNESCO World Heritage Site, the memorial was accompanied by a visitors' centre that opened in 2004.
