Caterpillar Valley Cemetery in Longueval, France, is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery designed by Herbert Baker and established on 28 August 1918 following an advance by the 38th (Welsh) Division. Named after the long valley rising eastward to Guillemont that British forces termed Caterpillar Valley, the cemetery initially held 25 graves but was substantially expanded after the war as remains from other battlefield cemeteries were concentrated here. It contains over 5,000 graves, including 214 from New Zealand servicemen who fell during the Battle of the Somme; approximately 3,800 of the burials remain unidentified. Most of the dead date from autumn 1916, with the remainder from August or September 1918.
