Built in 1889 on West Washington Street in South Bend, Indiana, Tippecanoe Place is a Richardsonian Romanesque mansion designed by architect Henry Ives Cobb. The house was commissioned by Clement Studebaker, co-founder of the Studebaker vehicle manufacturing firm, who resided there from its completion until his death in 1901. The mansion stands as one of the few surviving physical reminders of the Studebaker automotive empire—a coach manufacturer that uniquely succeeded in transitioning to automobile production. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977, the building remains a significant example of Gilded Age residential architecture within South Bend's West Washington Historic District.
