The Tomb of Aurangzeb, completed in 1707, stands in Khuldabad within Aurangabad district, Maharashtra, as a striking departure from the grand monumental tradition of Mughal architecture. Rather than a large, elaborately designed structure like the Taj Mahal, Aurangzeb was interred in an unmarked grave at the complex of the dargah, or shrine, of Sheikh Zainuddin—a choice made at his own direction. This simple burial reflects a deliberate rejection of the ornate sepulchers typical of Mughal emperors, making it architecturally and philosophically distinct among royal Mughal tombs. The site is recognized as a Monument of National Importance.
