Located at the intersection of 26th street and 7th avenue in downtown Bogotá, the Torre Colpatria is a 50-story postmodern tower block standing 196 metres tall. Constructed between 1973 and 1978, it opened in 1979 as Colombia's tallest building—a distinction it held until 2007, and regained briefly from 2007 to 2016. The skyscraper serves as the main headquarters of Colpatria Bank and houses numerous other financial institutions. Since 1998, the tower has been illuminated nightly; in 2012, Philips upgraded the original Xenon lighting system to a 120-metre-high LED installation capable of projecting high-definition images. As one of Bogotá's defining landmarks, it remains a prominent feature of the city's skyline.
