The Trump International Hotel and Tower, a 100-story condo-hotel designed by Adrian Smith of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, rises 1,388 feet (423.2 m) on Chicago's Near North Side beside the Chicago River. Built between 2005 and 2009, the modern skyscraper combines retail space, parking, a 339-room hotel, and residential condominiums. Originally envisioned as the world's tallest building when Trump announced it in 2001, the design was scaled back following the September 11 attacks. When completed in 2009, it became the second-tallest building in the United States and briefly held the distinction of containing the world's highest residential floor before the Burj Khalifa's completion. The hotel opened with limited services on January 30, 2008, achieving full operations by April 28 of that year.
