The United Nations University, headquartered in Shibuya, Tokyo, is the think tank and academic arm of the United Nations, designed by architect Kenzō Tange and completed in 1972. Established following UN Secretary-General U Thant's 1969 proposal and formally inaugurated in January 1975 as the world's first international university, it holds diplomatic status as a UN institution. Tokyo was selected as the main location due to Japan's commitment to provide facilities and a $100 million endowment. The university's mission centers on resolving global issues through collaborative research and education, with official research priorities in peace and governance, global development and inclusion, and environment, climate and energy. Since 2010, it has been authorized to grant postgraduate degrees in master's and doctoral programs, and maintains affiliated institutes across twelve countries.
