The University Library in Mumbai's City district is a landmark of Indo-Saracenic architecture, designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott and completed in 1880. Built between 1869 and 1878 as part of a Victorian complex surrounding the Oval Maidan, the library was formally opened to students and faculty on 27 February 1880, following the laying of its foundation stone on 1 March 1869. Notably, Scott designed the building from London without ever visiting Bombay. The library stands as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site that encompasses the Victorian buildings cluster in the city, including the adjacent Rajabai Clock Tower, with which it was constructed contemporaneously.
